FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is there a soundtrack to ...

"The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai" by Michael Boddicker

No official one, just a series of bootlegs. According to Michael Boddicker himself, the first bootleg, the Gold Edition, actually contains two demos he did for a Honda commercial, music that wasn't in the movie at all! For the complete story go here.

"Blade Runner" by Vangelis
BuySoundtrax released a complete re-recording performed and produced by Edgar Rothermich of the Vangelis score. It is as close to the original as you can get. A wonderful album!
"Highlander" by Michael Kamen and Queen
Although it was mentioned in the end credits of the movie that there would be an official soundtrack released on EMI, the only official release was the Queen album "A Kind of Magic", which had six songs from the movie in slightly different versions.  There is no official release yet, because the rights now with Universal, who have no interest in releasing the score. We have checked with them.
To date, there is no release of the Queen songs as they actually appear in the movie, including their version of "New York, New York".
Update: The 2011 Queen box set has the film version of "A Kind of Magic" on the bonus CD of the eponymous AKOM album as heard over the end credits.
"The Keep" by Tangerine Dream
In 1999, Edgar Froese released a limited edition of 150 CDs to the fan club. This CD goes for as high as $180. The music is VERY different from the Blue Moon bootleg, which clocks in at a little over 66 minutes.
6 tracks also appeared on the Tsunami collection "The Keep - Film Music of Tangerine Dream, performed by the Fantasy Merchants.

What's that music in this trailer?

Oftentimes, when the original music for a film has not been composed yet, the filmmakers or marketing people use music from other movies for their trailers. A list of which music was used for which movie can be found here. They also have a listing of studio logo music and who composed it, along with some QuickTime files to listen to. Amazing feature.
Sometimes, original music is composed specifically for a trailer. The man to do this is John Beal. There is a fantastic double CD out with original music, composed specifically for trailers that is not available anywhere else. Check it out, you won't regret it.

For a more detailed listing of what music by the Media Ventures people was used in other trailers or promotions, go here. No idea, how he got that information.
